A test of mercury in the hair of infertile men by the Hong Kong IVF Center found that the mercury content in the hair of infertile men who ate seafood meals four or more times a week was nearly 40% higher than that of fertile men, and more than 14 times higher than that of vegetarians .
The study collected hair samples from 117 men with infertility problems, as well as hair samples from 67 men with normal reproductive function and 45 vegetarians for mercury content analysis, and found that the mercury content in the hair of infertile men was significantly higher.
The study found that if infertile men eat seafood meals with fish, shrimp, and crab as the main course four or more times a week, the mercury content in hair reaches 5.38ppm, which is nearly 40% higher than that of men with normal fertility. It was found that the mercury content in hair of men who participated in the test was 60% higher than that of women. The average hair mercury content of vegetarians was only 0.38ppm, and about half of vegetarians had no mercury in their hair.
Dr. Leung Ka-kang, president of the Hong Kong Society for Reproductive Medicine, pointed out that mercury can affect the motility of sperm and reduce the number of sperm. Therefore, it is recommended that men with infertility problems eat less fish and seafood with high mercury content.
Liang Jiakang also said that although there is no evidence that mercury can also affect women ‘s fertility, many medical studies have found that too much mercury in women’s bodies will affect the health of the fetus , and even cause birth defects.
